Executive Summary
Predictive Model | Forecasting demand
Objective:
How we support children with special educational needs is a key area for our children’s directorate. The data is sensitive and, due to pressures in demand, it’s a major area of cost for all local authorities. Being able to forecast demand supports strategic planning and increases efficiencies.
Solution:
Our student built a complex data model by bringing together a number of years’ worth of data which she could then use to forecast future demand.
Results:
- Spearheading & experimenting on projects that may not otherwise be realised but are integral to strategic planning.
- Broadens your data perspective and brings about new insight and thinking.
- Shines a spotlight on the work of your data teams and reinforces the value and potential of data.

Outcome
How we support children with special educational needs is a key area for our children’s directorate. The data is sensitive and, due to pressures in demand, it’s a major area of cost for all local authorities.
It’s also a complicated area from a data point of view as we hold data from a number of sources with children being supported in and out of borough and also in the independent sector.
Our student tackled all of this data head on and worked diligently to understand the data and what we needed to show. But most of all she was curious about the data and how she could use the tools she was learning to deliver the most business impact.
Complex and sensitive data to help forecast demand
Our student tackled all of this data head on and worked diligently to understand the data and what we needed to show.
But most of all she was curious about the data and how she could use the tools she was learning to deliver the most business impact.
The student built a complex data model by bringing together a number of years’ worth of data which she could then use to forecast future demand.
This was another first for us as previously the data had been presented as an annual snapshot.
Bringing new ideas and curiosity
With additional capability we were able to entrust external data professionals with spearheading & experimenting on sensitive projects that may not otherwise be realised and yet they are integral to strategic planning.
The programme broadened our data perspective and brought about new insight and thinking whilst shining a spotlight on the work of our data teams, reinforcing the value and potential of data.
